MPMF artist profile: Wonky Tonk

Performing a FREE popup concert at the Segway Garage, Central & Vine St

Saturday, 9/26 @ 8pm, sponsored by MusicLi

Jasmine Lorraine Poole (AKA “Wonk”) grew up in the hardscrabble portion of the American heartland. Kentucky, to be precise. Her world of loss and longing is familiar terrain for lovers of country, bluegrass and folk music but, just as Kentucky can be viewed as a bridge between north and south, Wonk’s music blends elements of Indie/Alternative rock with old school country. It’s hard to separate the wonk from the tonk. Nor should you try.

FREEOSK: We’re looking forward to your free show at the Segway Garage on Saturday. What can fans expect from that show?

Wonk: Fluff. Twang. Stumbling in sync. G, C and D chords over and over!

F: What are you MOST looking forward to at MidPoint this year?

W: People getting jazzed about the music scene and sharing that with people who usually don’t participate in local tunes.

F: The Freeosks will be giving away free Wonky Tonk band buttons, while supplies last. Can fans pick up any other merch at your show?

W: We’ll have the full album Stuff We Leave Behind for sale, as well as free Wonky Tonk stickers.

F: What’s your impression of the typical Cincinnati audience? Are they rowdy? Appreciative? Laid-back?

W: Very situational. Cincy is a great music town. Sometimes they have nothing but attention and sometimes they could care less.

F: Wonky Tonk tours a lot, so you’ve probably learned some handy road tour hacks.

JP: Dry shampoo! Comes in a small can and makes you look less like a road bum and more like a respectable member of society.

F: What did you grow up listening to?

W: Punk rock! Stuff like Modest Mouse, Against Me! and Rilo Kiley. Wonky Tonk has been described as “country touchtones with chamber pop.” How I started playing country music I have no idea, but I am thankful it led me to Loretta Lynn and John Prine.

F: Do you have upcoming events you’re looking forward to?

W: Yes…

Adjust Your Eyes Festival (Cincinnati, OH) –  October 11

Release of Denmark music video and single “Bulleit” – November 13

Iron Fest at Southport House (Newport, KY) – November 14

Wonky Tonk CD Release Party at Northside Tavern – December 4
